The Volvo EX90: Smart. Safe. World Luxury Car of 2024

Hot off its recent Malaysian unveiling, the all-new, fully electric Volvo EX90 has achieved a remarkable milestone — being crowned World Luxury Car of the Year 2024.

Announced ahead of the New York International Auto Show, the World Car Awards jury — comprising 96 esteemed automotive journalists from 30 countries — praised the EX90’s refined Scandinavian luxury, powerful all-electric performance, and safety-first innovation.

The accolade further cements the EX90’s status as Volvo’s most technologically advanced and safest car to date. Engineered as a “computer on wheels”, the EX90 delivers a seamless, ever-improving experience through over-the-air software updates, intelligent sensors, and a next-generation safety suite rooted in real-time data.

Built on Volvo Cars’ in-house Superset tech stack and powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms, the EX90’s core computing system drives every aspect of the car — from infotainment and safety features to advanced driver assistance.

A full suite of radars, cameras, ultrasonic sensors and an all-new lidar system make the EX90 the first Volvo to be hardware-ready for progressive autonomous driving, as regulations and software capabilities evolve. The sensors also support an upgraded Pilot Assist system with automatic steering during lane changes — a step closer to hands-free convenience.

Lidar: A New Perspective for Safety
Seamlessly integrated into the roofline is the Luminar lidar unit that uses pulsed lasers to measure ranges with high precision and in three-dimensional space. Unlike systems that rely solely on radars and cameras, lidar adds a new perspective that helps identify actual objects and surroundings in real-time whether detecting pedestrians at up to 250-metre distances or hazards or loose tyre on a black road 120m ahead, all while traveling at highway speeds and in complete darkness.

The difference lidar can make for real-life safety is remarkable: Volvo Car’s research indicates that adding lidar to an already safe car can reduce severe accidents by up to 20 percent, and overall crash avoidance can be improved by up to 9 percent¹.

Award-Winning Driver Understanding System: A Co-pilot that Looks Out for You
The EX90 also introduces Volvo’s award-winning Driver Understanding System, recently named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2024. Using two interior cameras, capacitive steering wheel sensors, and patented software that recognises real-time gaze patterns and steering behaviour to monitor whether the driver is drowsy, distracted, or impaired, so the car can step in to support if needed.

In most cases, the Volvo EX90 will start with soft audio and visual alerts followed by louder and more consistent notifications and prepare to steer or slow the car safely in traffic. In case the driver becomes suddenly ill or unconscious, the EX90 can safely stop the car, turn on hazard lights, and contact emergency services.

The Driver Understanding system can even differentiate if the driver is visually distracted by looking at the road too little or if the driver shows signs of cognitive distraction by staring at the road too much. The technology is derived from learnings from decades of real-world research, simulation testing and studies conducted by Volvo Cars.

Occupant Sensing: Leave No One Behind
Another new safety technology in the Volvo EX90 is the Occupant Sensing feature, which is highly sensitive and able to accurately detect the tiniest movements at sub-millimetre scale – such as those of a sleeping toddler.

Designed to help address a cause of tragedy that has proven all too real for too many families – the “forgotten baby syndrome”, the Occupant Sensing only activates when you attempt to lock the car. If a family member or pet is detected inside, the car will remain unlocked and the car will alert you through lights, the car horn, and via notifications on the Volvo Cars App. The EX90’s climate system will also remain on to improve comfort and lower the risk of heatstroke.

Next-generation User Interface
A 14.5-inch centre screen powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms is the Volvo EX90’s gateway to one of the best infotainment systems. Car functions and settings, navigation, media controls, connectivity and more can be accessed through a simplified, more intuitive next-generation user interface that requires less taps to access required functions. Furthermore, the centre screen also acts just as a smartphone, as it learns from owners’ behaviour and frequently used apps to offer better recommendations over time.

Complementing the central display is a second, smaller screen right behind the steering wheel with focused information such as directions, current speed, and remaining range. Drivers can customise this with different viewing modes, such as “Calm” for minimal distractions, “Surround” for a real-time view of traffic around the car, and “Navigation” for a quicker way to view map directions. This is further supported by the largest heads-up display to date on a Volvo car, so drivers never have to take their eyes off the road.
